Ship on Main-Danube-Canal grounded and was breached

On Jan 22, 2026, at 12:52 p.m. the fire department was alerted to the lock in Hausen, in the Forchheim district. after the 'Adeline', while transiting the Main-Danube Canal enroute from Würzburg to Rotterdam, had suffered a brief failure of the rudder system due to a technical defect, so that the vessel veered off course and ran onto a riverbank. The hull was breached, and it began taking on water in the engine room, which was flooded. The ship was secured in pos. 49° 41' N 011° 02'E. Emergency crews later managed to stabilize the situation. More water was pumped out than entered the vessel. Fire department, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the water rescue and the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) were mobilized. Professional divers were called from Würzburg to patch the leak. An oil boom was deployed around the vessel. The icy temperatures hampered the operation. There was significant ice formation on the water, which made it more difficult to contain leaking oil and also complicated the divers' work. The approximately 100 emergency personnel,were able to warm up in heated tents with hot drinks. The Main-Danube Canal was closed to shipping. The water police expected the closure to last until Jan 23 at midday. The ship remained stationary on that day. Due to the low temperatures and the lack of shipping traffic on the Main-Danube Canal, the waterway could freeze. Initial estimates placed the damage to the ship in the five-digit Euro range.
