Tanker aborted delivery of Russian diesel in New York

Thu Oct 29 12:18:15 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Agioi Fanendes', which designated as the first carrier of Russian diesel to the United States under an agreement between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, was no longer listing New York as its destination. The change came amid political pressure and potential legal issues related to importing Russian energy into the United States. The tanker had departed Primorsk, Russia, on Oct 22 with approximately 40,000 metric tons of ultra-low-sulfur diesel and was scheduled to arrive in New York on Nov 7. However, the tanker was at anchor near Skagen on Oct 26, with a "for orders" status. On Oct 27, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Thanassis Martinos, CEO of Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, the Athens, Greece-based shipping company that owns the vessel. He asked the company to recall the ship if its shipment was destined for a U.S. port and to cease similar transactions involving Russian diesel in the future. Blumenthal argued that the Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act, passed in 2022, prohibited the entry of this cargo, regardless of the General License (General License 135) issued by the U.S. Treasury Department. This license authorizes transactions involving Russian diesel until April 7, 2027. A government license does not automatically make a transaction legal if it violates existing law. The power to legalise the transactions remained with the Congress. Blumenthal gave the company until Oct 31 to disclose the identities of the seller, the buyer, the ship's charterer, the insurance companies, and the terminal operators involved in the shipment.

Russia resumed exports to USA and other countries after lifting of US sanctions

Mon Oct 26 21:57:28 CET 2026 Timsen

Russia has used the lifting of U.S. sanctions on the purchase of diesel to resume exports both to the United States but also other countries, in what President Vladimir Putin will regard as a diplomatic victory and a weakening of solidarity in support for Ukraine. The 'Dolunay' completed loading on Oct 16, and is signaling its arrival at Alanya in Turkey on Nov 1. The Turkish government has indicated that it was about to resume imports of Russian diesel, on the back of the Trump deal, and has already begun to reduce production of diesel from its own domestic refineries so as to exploit the price differential on cheaper Russian imports. The 'Leruo' (IMO: 9385831), which was on both UK and EU sanctions lists, being loaded with about 40,000 tons of diesel oil, departed the Russiaon port of Primorsk on Oct 16, 2026, indicating on AIS that it was heading for the Atlantic coast “for orders,” but was expected to dock in New York on about Nov 7. Its exact course through waters around the Shetland Islands was not yet clear, but if not through territorial waters, then the ship was likely to have passed through the UK’s Exclusive Economic Zone, and has done so without being intercepted, despite its flag of convenience and UK/EU sanctioned status. There may have been an intent to intercept the ship, but simply a lack of any available Royal Navy frigates to undertake the operation. Two other product tankers, but both unsanctioned, have also recently loaded at Primorsk. The 'Agioi Fanendes' passed through the Skagerrak on Oct 26, also with about 40,000 tons of diesel on board, declaring it was operating “For Orders.” It had earlier indicated it was bound for New York, due to arrive on Nov 7, but now with its actual destination undeclared. It could also be heading for the Atlantic seaboard, although industry sources suggest that Morocco may also be resuming imports of Russian diesel. The 'Dolunay' (IMO: 9327463) completed loading on Oct 16, and is signaling its arrival at Alanya in Turkey on Nov 1. The Turkish government has indicated that it was about to resume imports of Russian diesel, on the back of the Trump deal, and has already begun to reduce production of diesel from its own domestic refineries so as to exploit the price differential on cheaper Russian imports.

Loaden tanker may be underway from Russia to USA

Fri Oct 23 16:23:21 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Agioi Fanendes', owned by the Greek shipping company Eastern Mediterranean Maritime, has departed Russia’s Baltic port of Primorsk on Oct 23, 2026, carrying a cargo of 40,000 tonnes of ultra-low-sulphur diesel, in what could be the first shipment to the US under the recent export agreement between Washington and Moscow. At 08:42 a.m. UTC, the vessel changed its AIS destination to “for orders”, leaving her final destination unconfirmed. It was last recorded sailing west through the Gulf of Finland at around 12.8 knots.
