Damaged shadow tanker towed to Yalova
On July 10, five tugs of Coastal Safety pulled the 'Altura', which had been damaged by a drone on May 25 at 12.30 a.m. about 15 kilometres off the Turkish coast, in unloaden condition through the Bosphorus to Yalova. The ship had suffered hull and engine room damage. The shadow tanker had been in an STS transfer with the 'Velora' (IMO: 9290373), which was attacked too. The tanker had been sanctioned by the EU on Oct 25, 2025.
Drone attacks on three tankers
On May 27/28, 2026, three shadow fleet tankers that had transited into the Black Sea came under attack. The 'James II' (IMO: 9253909), which was underway, appeared to have suffered damage, while the drones targeting the tankers 'Altura', which was loaded with 140000 tons crude, and 'Velora' (IMO: 9290373), which were anchored about 14 miles off the Turkish coast in the Black Sea in pos. 41° 39' N 028° 34' E, appeared to have failed to explode. The tankers were engaged in an STS transfer near Kilyos, north of Istanbul, and had to be evacuated. The 'Altura' had transited the Bosphorus on March 16 and was moored since March 27. The 'Velora' had transited the Strait on April 7. Both ships had been stationary near Yenikoy since. Coastal Safety lifeboats were sent to the scene for assistance. All crew members aboard the tankers were reported in good condition. Both the 'Velora' and 'Altura' were reported as being registered in Sierra Leone, although the 'Altura'’s flag has been listed as false already since November 2025. The tankers were managed by companies in Turkey and sanctioned by the UK and EU. The 'Altura' had already been damaged in an attack on March 26. The 'Altura' was subject to sanctions by Ukraine, the EU, the UK, and Switzerland. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, the vessel has made over 20 calls at Russian ports, regularly transporting millions of barrels of Russian oil (including from Rosneft) in circumvention of G7 restrictions and the price cap. Between January 2024 and July 2025, it transported approximately 6 million barrels of Russian oil. Furthermore, the vessel could be linked to an Iranian tanker network controlled by the inner circle of Iran’s top leadership. TAnker wihch delivered Russian oil to Kulevi sanctioned
On the 4rth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United Kingdom on Feb 24, 2026, announced an updated package of anti-Russian sanctions, which included the 'Kaisery', that delivered Russian oil to the port of Kulevi on Oct 2, 2025. The tanker is now registered under the name'Altura'. In the updated sanctions list, the vessel appeared under this new name. On Oct 2, 2025, Georgia’s Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance issued a statement that the Russian oil company Russneft had delivered its first cargo to an oil processing facility in Kulevi. The 'Kaisery', then sailing under the Panamanian flag, entered the port of Kulevi from a Russian port carrying up to 100,000 tonnes of crude oil. The shipment had been sent by a Russian company and was intended to undergo import customs procedures. The cargo was unloaded into a temporary customs storage facility for further inspection. The timing and context of the sanctions suggested that London was closely monitoring vessels involved in exporting Russian oil, particularly after Western countries introduced a price cap and other restrictions. A proposal to impose sanctions on the port of Kulevi had been included in the European Union’s 20th sanctions package. However, it did not pass after Hungary and Slovakia vetoed the measure. The issue of the Kulevi port was formally discussed in Brussels and was accompanied by a package of supporting evidence.
