47 passengers and four crew members rescued after inter-island ferry sank
The 'Apple Syder', with 47 passengers and four crew members on board, started foundering shortly after setting off from the port of Basseterre on June 29, 2026. All 53 people could be rescued and taken to the J. N. France General Hospital, where they received medical treatment. The Armed Forces had deployed all available resources, after the vessel started experiencing difficulties only minutes after departing Basseterre bound for Nevis. The ship had suffered a cracked pontoon and the cabin began rapidly taking on water. A distress call was issued at approximately 8:33 a.m. The m/v 'Makana' responded after hearing the distress call and assisted with the rescue efforts, while the SKNDF Coast Guard immediately deployed rescue personnel and assets to the scene. The passengers and crew, wearing life jackets, were floating in the water while rescue teams, Coast Guard personnel, and fishermen worked to bring them to safety. The rescue efforts were carried out by the Coast Guard Unit of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, The St. Kitts and Nevis Fire & Rescue Services, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and its specialised units along with the Department of Maritime Affairs, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The submerged vessel was later towed back to Port Zante. A mobile crane of L&B lifted the 'Apple Syder' out of the water at the ferry terminal. The St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA) advised that the relevant authorities are conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
