Damaged bulk carrier towed to repair facility

Mon Oct 26 11:59:51 CET 2026 Timsen

On the afternoon of Oct 24, the 'Aquacharm' was moved from its berth in Dung Quat to the dock of the Oil and Gas Shipbuilding and Mechanical Industry Company Ltd. in the Dung Quat Port Area, Quang Ngai Province, to repair the damage caused by the allision with the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Special Pier. The ship was docked safely at 10:50 a.m. The ship remained under the supervision of the relevant authorities in accordance with the court order. On Oct 21, the Quang Ngai Region 2 People's Court had issued an order to detain the vessel for 30 days to ensure the resolution of a maritime dispute. The Quang Ngai Port Authority has notified the Quang Ngai Region 2 People's Court, the Quang Ngai Region 2 Coast Guard Command, the Border Guard Agency, Customs, and other relevant authorities of the change of mooring location to continue coordinating the monitoring, inspection, and oversight of the vessel during its detention. The bulk carrier, en route from the port of Hedland to the port of Dung Quat (Quang Ngai Province), had 22 crew members on board and was transporting 170,586 tons of iron ore. The ship entered the port at 6:00 a.m. on Oct 14, being towed by the three tugs 'Hai Au 03', 'Hai Au 04' and 'An Binh 01'. Bulk carrier seized after allision in Dung Quat

Mon Oct 26 11:56:36 CET 2026 Timsen

On the afternoon of Oct 21, the Quang Ngai Maritime Port Authority has issued a seizure notice for the 'Aquacharm' carrying 170,586 tons of iron ore, following the allision with a wharf in Dung Quat, in accordance with regulations. The bulk carrier was seized pursuant to Decision No. 154/QD-BGTB, issued by the People's Court of Region 2 – Quang Ngai. During the seizure period, the authorities have ordered that the vessel may not leave the port waters, which were managed by the Quang Ngai Maritime Port Authority. It has also been ordered to remain at its designated berth, maintain a full crew, and observe watchkeeping duties as required by law. At the same time, other regulations must be implemented to ensure maritime safety and security and prevent environmental pollution.

Allision in Dung Quat

Wed Oct 21 10:07:01 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Oct 18, 2026, the 'Aquacharm' allided with an under-construction wharf, while berthing at the port of Dung Quat. The impact tore an approximately five-metre section of the bow above the waterline. No pollution has been reported. The bulk carrier had arrived at Dung Quat on Oct 14, loaded with 170,856 tonnes of iron ore from Port Hedland and 22 crew members, among them five South Koreans, one Japanese national and 16 Filipinos, on board. On Oct 18 at 4:45 p.m., the pilot contacted the officer on duty at the Dung Quat VTS to instruct him to board the vessel and assist with navigation to dock at Pier 10 as planned. At approximately 5:45 p.m., while the 'Aquacharm' was manoeuvring towards berth 10, it struck a 50-metre extension being constructed between berths 10 and 11. A large section of the new berth extension was heavily damaged. While berth 10 was affected, the port’s other 11 berths remained operational, with production continuing without disruption. The extent of the wharf damage was still awaiting formal assessment. The ship suffered a large breach on both sides of the bow above the waterline and more damage at the port side foreship. An investigation has been opened into the incident. Preliminary accounts stated that the captain had ailed to control its speed due to communication errors. However, the Dung Quat border guard station stated that the speed had been communicated to the pilot multiple times. The Quang Ngai Maritime Administration required an enhanced emergency readiness to protect the vessel, while it remained at its berth. A tug has been directed to remain on standby with the vessel around the clock, with the authorities requesting a plan for securing the vessel before the onset of heavy weather. Operations were focused on offloading the ore from the vessel.
