Drug smuggling ship linked to "Bolle Jos" Jos Leijdekkers
The 'Arconian', which was intercepted carrying 30,000 kilos of cocaine by the Spanish Coastguard on May 1, was part of a fleet linked to Jos Leijdekkers, 34, also known as 'Bolle Jos', oeprating a fleet linked to drug smuggling in the Mediterranean. The ship was en route to Libya from Sierra Leone, where the convicted drug criminal lives. Like three other cargo ships, the 'Arconian' was registered with a corporate group in Flensburg. All ships were involved in drug smuggling in the Mediterranean on behalf of various drug traffickers. The Spanish authorities assume that 'Bolle Jos' was behind the cocaine on the 'Arconian'. He had stored 30 tons in Sierra Leone, organised the transport, and delivered the drugs. The Spanish police suspected that the intention was to throw the drugs overboard in smaller packages off the coast of Libya. Speedboats were then supposed to retrieve the drugs from the sea and bring them to the Spanish coast. Drug traffickers have frequently used this method with the four ships in the smuggling fleet. 23 people were arrested on board the ship: five Dutch nationals, 17 Filipinos, and one Surinamese national. The cocaine had a value of over 810 million euros. 'Bolle Jos' is on the international wanted list and has been convicted in absentia multiple times in the Netherlands and Belgium for, among other things, drug offenses and assassinations. He lives in Sierra Leone, where he is in a relationship with the daughter of the country's president. The Dutch government urged Sierra Leone to extradite him, but so far, this has come to nothing.
Well known Dutch criminals guarded cocaine enroute from Sierra Leone to Libya
A tip from a criminal informant of the Dutch police led to the record seizure of cocaine aboard the 'Arconian'. Five Dutchmen and a Sudanese were on the 'Arconian' wheb the ship was intercepted off the coast of Western Sahara, They were hiding in the front part of the ship when a special unit of the Guardia Civil raided it. The group of six was heavily armed. Spanish police found three machine guns, two pistols, and a large quantity of ammunition. The six men were tasked with guarding the massive shipment of cocaine on the ship. It lay hidden in a long gallery behind a metal door. For a week, it was unclear exactly how much drugs were involved. Confidential Spanish documents now revealed that there were a total of 1,279 packages of cocaine on board: 30,216 kilos in total. Never before has such a large quantity of cocaine been intercepted worldwide. The value was estimated by the Spanish authorities at 812 million euros. In addition, the police seized 2,108 20-liter jerrycans of petrol: more than 42,000 liters of fuel. Some of the Dutch nationals were known to the police. The armed escort included, among others, the Rotterdam resident Alexander T. (36). He was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 after shooting a man in the neck at an Antillean party. The victim survived the attempted murder. However, the bullet, which went through the cervical vertebra, could not be removed. Co-suspect Jomairo M. (22) from Almere was previously arrested in the port of Rotterdam in 2023. He presumably intended to retrieve drugs. And Xavier S. from Groningen (33) appeared in court in February 2026 for laundering over a ton of stolen goods. The ship departed from Sierra Leone on April 22 and was on its way to Libya. More than a week later, the Spanish police received a tip from the Dutch investigative services. A criminal informant reported that the 'Arconian' was packed with cocaine. The same information was also passed on by the American Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). According to information from the Dutch Criminal Intelligence Team and the DEA, the plan was to transfer the drugs onto high-speed speedboats in the middle of the sea. These would then transport the cocaine to the Spanish mainland, thereby evading checks in regular seaports. Due to the enormous scale of the cocaine shipment, the Dutch suspects, and the link to Sierra Leone, sources within both the underworld and law enforcement point towards ‘Bolle Jos’ Leijdekkers to be behind the transport. Leijdekkers is the most wanted criminal in the Netherlands and must serve a 24-year sentence in the Netherlands for drug trafficking and violence. He has been hiding in Sierra Leone for several years, where he is said to be in a relationship with the president's daughter. Largest drug seizure ever in Spain
The Civil Guard continued to search the 'Arconian' at the Navy base in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, under the supervision of the National Court. The Government Delegation in the Canary Islands confirmed on May5 that the cocaine seized by the Civil Guard south of the Canary Islands aboard the ship was the largest ever drug seizure, possibly three to four times the prior record. While the corps have so far refused to provide any data on the operation, because there was secrecy of the investigation, the Unified Association of Civil Guards has announced that the 'Arconian' was transporting around 50 tons of cocaine. The street value of the 'Spanish' intercepted cocaine could be 3 to 3.5 billion euros. 23 crew members from from the Philippines, the Netherlands, and Angola have been arrested in the operation. The arrested crew members of the ship have been transferred to Madrid to be brought before an investigating judge on May 6. He will decide whether they go into pre-trial detention and whether they will be extradited, or whether they will be tried as a gang in Spain.
