Investigation into possible presence of explosive device in Antwerp

Wed Jun 24 13:25:23 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Belgian federal prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to determine whether the 'Arrhenius' was carrying an explosive device on its hull when it departed from the port of Antwerp on May 16. The Belgian military intelligence service, SGRS, considered the presence of a suspicious object "probable" after conducting a thorough analysis of theavailable images on June 24. It could, howver, not be confirmed whether the object was an explosive device or determine at what point during the voyage it may have been placed there. The case has revived various hypotheses, ranging from a Russian disinformation operation to a possible sabotage attempt linked to the war in Ukraine. Russian intelligence and investigative services claim that, during an inspection of the submerged section of the hull, divers discovered magnetic naval mines manufactured in a NATO member country,"claims based on videos and photographs whose authenticity has not been independently verified. The Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot initially considered this hypothesis unlikely: "The images show that the ship sailed from Antwerp without any such object being visible, indicating that it was most likely not present during its stop in Belgium." But a Belgian intelligence report indicated that an object was "probably attached" to the ship's hull when it left Antwerp.

Tanker evacuated after explosive devices were found attached to hull

Mon Jun 01 08:57:09 CEST 2026 Timsen

Enroute from Antwerp to Ust-Luga, anomalous explosive devices were found attached to the hull of the ' Arrhenius' on May 27, 2026. During a subsurface hull inspection, divers identified suspected magnetic mines secured near the engine room section. Initial technical assessments by a specialized explosives team confirmed that the devices contained an estimated seven kilograms of explosive mass each. The ship was evacuated, and the mines were safely removed and neutralised without causing damage to the vessel or injuries to the crew. Authorities have opened a criminal investigation and wer examining the devices to determine their origin and how they were attached to the ship. The vessel remained in the area outside Ust-Luga. It was to have loaded a cargo and proceed to Samsun and remained in pos. 59° 52' N 028° 24' E as of May 27. The captain of the vessel told the authorities that they had proceeded to Antwerp after loading a cargo of LPG, but when they arrived at ST. Petersburg on May 12, were instructed to anchor offshore because the terminal was not ready. They blamed a strike by Belgian port workers for delaying the arrival. The ship docked after holding approximately 36 hours, and unloading took an additional 25 hours. It had departed Antwerp on May 16 and proceeded directly to Ust-Luga with no stops. Based on initial investigations of Russia’s Investigative Committee, it was concluded that the magnetic mines could not have been installed in Russia’s territorial waters. Tanker saved four fishermen

Thu Jun 18 11:20:55 CEST 2015 Timsen

Four people were handed over from the "Gaschem Bremen" to authorities of the National Institute of Migration in the port of Lazaro Cardenas on June 17, 2015, after they were taken aboard the tanker in the Pacific between the ports of Lazaro Cardenas and Acapulco. The four rescued had suffered problems with their boat, due to a storm and the subsequent hurricane "Carlos". The castaways, allegedly 4 fishermen, three of Ecuadorian nationality and one Colombian, had been adrift for seven days when they were rescued. The tanker which was coming from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, had 8000 tons of ammonia on board which were destined for the company Sadcom West.
