Suction set moored ship in motion
On July 21, 2026, at approximately 06:30 a.m. the 'Hosei Venture' (IMO: 9550670), which was moored at the pier in Brake, was set in motion by the suction effect following the passage of the 'Arvika', which had initially passed heading upstream at 8.2 knots, and the 'Western Tokyo' (IMO: 9838498), which was heading downstream at 8.5 knots at almost the same time. As a result, the deployed gangway was torn loose and sustained significant damage, rendering it unusable and making access to the ship extremely difficult. No personal injuries occurred, as no one was on the gangway at the time of the accident. Investigations into the cause of the accident conducted by the Brake Water Police revealed that the vessel had not been moored in accordance with regulations at the time of the incident. Some mooring lines had not been properly tensioned, allowing the ship to shift position. The passing vessel heading downstream had proceeded at an appropriate speed and was therefore not the cause of the accident. As the damage was limited to the vessel itself, and following consultation with the port authority, administrative offense proceedings were initiated against the responsible captain under the Lower Saxony Port Regulations, and a corresponding fine was imposed. A report was also filed with the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation in Hamburg. Report with photo: https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/119277/6318811
Bulkcarrier left Escravos two weeks after collision
On Nov 17, 2018, whilst inbound on the Escravos River bound for Wari Port, Nigeria, and laden with a cargo of wheat, the Panama flagged bulkcarrier "Efi Theo" (IMO: 9145982) was in collision with the "Arvika" and was breached at starboard side. The vessel encountered a flooded cargo hold and subsequently grounded. The owners entered into a LOF salvage agreement with Greece based Salvors Five Ocean Salvage, whom invoked the SCOPIC Clause. The bulkcarrier was grounded in the Bight of Benin in pos. 05° 35.22' N 005° 22.82' E. A salvage team of 27 arrived on board the vessel on Dec 5 and started working to fabricate and install a patch to make cargo hold No. 3 watertight. The hold will then be pumped free of water in readiness for a refloating attempt. the "Arvika" left Escravos on Dec 2 and headed to Singapore, ETA Dec 31.
