Fire in scrap cargo in Newport
On Oct 1, 2026, a fire started aboard the 'ASL Leban' during loading operations of the scrap cargo, at the docks of Newport, and there was heavy smoke development in the area. The Associated British Ports (ABP) were working closely with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and other partner agencies to adress the incident. Members of the public were asked to avoid the area, and anyone affected by the smoke was urged to close the windows and doors. The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was urging people not to fly drones over the scene as it affected firefighting operations. A service drone was to support firefighting operations. Natural Resources Wales was also on site on Oct 1, supporting the fire service and advising on ways to minimise the environmental impact. The cargo hatches were closed, and the ship's hull was cooled down with water. The response was continued on Oct 2.
