One Indonesian crew member died in drone attack
On July 16, 2026, at 12.30 a.m., the 'Asomatos', with 24 people on board - among them three Russian port workers, three Greeks, four Egyptians and 14 Indonesians - and a cargo of 4,751 metric tons of wheat on board, was targeted by three drones in Russian waters off Kavkaz. The first drone struck the starboard side of the ship; during subsequent attacks, a second drone hit the smokestack and deck, causing significant damage to the living quarters on the starboard side. A third drone targeted the ship's number 3 crane. The attack resulted in the death of one Indonesian crew member, Savaş Çakar’ın (54). The living quarters suffered heavy damage. The ship diverted southwards towards Türkiye and anchored three nautical miles off Sarıyer Kısırkaya on July 17. A public prosecutor and crime scene investigation teams, assigned under the coordination of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, have sailed to the ship by sea to conduct a detailed evidence collection. The body of the deceased was disembarked onto the patrol boat and taken to shore. The ' Asomatos' remained anchored in pos. 41° 17' N 029° 00' E as of July 23. Ukraine accusesdEgypt of allowing looted grain to be unloaded at Abu Qir
Ukraine's foreign minister publicly called out Egypt on May 5, 2026, for allowing the 'Asomatos', which was allegedly carrying looted Ukrainian wheat to unload at Abu Qir, escalating a diplomatic dispute over what Kyiv described as a Russian scheme to launder stolen agricultural goods through Egyptian waters. The bulk carrier was permitted to dock at the port on April 28, 2026, to offload 26,900 tons of stolen Ukrainian wheat, despite Ukraine having formally requested Egypt intercept the shipment four days earlier. He described the incident as the fourth such case of "Russia's grain laundering in Egyptian ports since April." Ukraine's Prosecutor General had already submitted a formal legal assistance request to Egypt's Ministry of Justice, providing all necessary data and legal grounds to seize the vessel and its cargo before it docked. The grain was exported by the sanctioned company Agro-Frigat via Russian-occupied Crimea, in violation of international law. Ukraine has long served as a major wheat supplier to Cairo, one of the world's largest importers of grain.
