Two tugs towed to Heraklion
On the evening of July 14, 2026, the Port Authorities of Karpathos and Rhodes were informed by the Joint SAR Center (EKSED) of the Greek Coast Guard about a mechanical failure of the 'Atco Tamara' with eight British crew members on board, which was sailing in 110 nautical miles southeast of Karpathos. The Coast Guard-deployed an offshore vessel, and also the tug 'Atco Joud' (IMO: 9392523) proceeded to the ship to provide assistance and established a towing connection. During the towing process, the cable of the 'Atco Tamara' got entangled with the propeller of the 'Atco Joud', so that the operation was interrupted. Subsequently, two passing ships, among them the 'Mentoras' (IMO: 9061722), diverted to the scene, and the latter took both tugs in tow to the Linoperamata Bay off Heraklion, where they were safely anchored on July 22 at noon. The 1st Linoperamata Port Department of the Central Port Authority of Heraklion banned both tugs from sailing until the damage was repaired and seaworthiness certificates were presented by the monitoring classification society.
