Grounding near Dormagen
On the morning of Aug 16, 2026, at 5:30 a.m. the 'Balder' ran aground on the Rhine at river kilometre 710.6, near the Dormagen port. Prior to the incident, the vessel had taken on 308 tonnes of caustic soda at the port's loading station. After loading, the 35-year-old Dutch skipper attempted to turn the tanker to port to continue the voyage to the planned destination of Rotterdam. During the maneuver, the vessel was caught by the current and drifted towards the right bank of the Rhine. Due to persistently low water levels, the vessel eventually struck the riverbed and became stuck. In consultation with the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA Cologne), the skipper pumped the cargo from the forward tanks to the aft tanks. This caused the bow to rise, allowing the tanker to refloat without external assistance. Officers from the Cologne Water Police subsequently documented the incident at the port of Niehl. There were no injuries or property damage resulting from the grounding. Any risk to the environment from leaking caustic soda was immediately ruled out. The ship arrived in Rotterdam on Aug 18.
