FSUI urged Indian authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard the 23 Indian crew members after attack
The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) has urged Indian authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard the 23 Indian crew members aboard the 'Baryon', which came under a drone attack on Sep 2, enroute from Russia to Karachi. The strike at starboard side sparked a small fire in the accommodation section, while a second drone was reportedly spotted in the vicinity. The crew managed to extinguish the fire, allowing the 'Baryon' to resume its voyage under its own power, despite significant damages in the living quarters. All 23 Indian crew members aboard the vessel were reported safe. On Sep 10, the ship transited the Bosphorus enroute to Icdas. The FSUI has called on India’s Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to verify the condition and safety of the crew. The union has also called for stronger government measures to protect Indian seafarers operating in war-risk areas. In addition, it has urged authorities to ensure that seafarers exposed to such risks received an appropriate High Risk Area (HRA) compensation and to raise the issue with the relevant authorities.
