Batavia pulled over dike

Fri Oct 09 12:19:59 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Batavia' was moved about 250 meters from a pontoon, over the Markermeer dike, to its permanent location at the Museum Batavialand on Oct 2. The operation required 56 axle lines with self-propelled modular transporters. The large axle capacity was not primarily due to the weight of the ship, but to the need to protect the more than 30-year-old wooden hull from stress during transport. Before the move, the ship was prepared at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam and placed on a specially built 101-ton support frame. After arriving in Lelystad, the ship was driven over the dike via a specially built ramp and lowered onto a concrete foundation. Here, the 'Batavia' will be the center of the Museum Batavialand, which is scheduled to reopen at the end of 2028. The 'Batavia' was built between 1985 and 1995 as a full-scale reconstruction of the original Dutch East India Company ship from 1628. VOC replica on last voyage

Sun Sep 20 11:04:46 CEST 2026 Timsen

The VOC 'Batavia' started its last voyage on the morning of Sep 19, 2026, and was towed from Lelystad across the Markermeer to Amsterdam. The showpiece of the Batavialand Museum was suffering from severe wood rot and, following major maintenance, would be given a permanent home on dry land. The ship's departure remained uncertain until the very last moment due to persistent wind gusts on the Markermeer. All parties involved in the crossing—including the tug crews—made the final decision at 6:45 a.m., just 15 minutes before the scheduled departure, after the wind had died down enough. Shortly after 7 a.m. two tugs slowly pulled the 'Batavia' away from the quay, enroute to a dry dock at the Damen Shiprepair, where it was placed in a 87-ton steel cradle. https://www.omroepflevoland.nl/nieuws/524388/de-allerlaatste-reis-van-de-batavia:-voc-schip-verlaat-definitief-het-water https://www.telegraaf.nl/video/timelapse-beelden-replica-voc-schip-batavia-komt-aan-in-amsterdam/161694455.html https://jeugdjournaal.nl/artikel/2631661-beroemd-nederlands-schip-vaart-voor-het-laatst-dit-zijn-kinderdromen https://nos.nl/artikel/2631622-voor-het-laatst-kiest-de-batavia-vanuit-lelystad-het-ruime-sop https://www.parool.nl/amsterdam/de-batavia-heeft-haar-laatste-vaart-gemaakt-replica-van-voc-schip-aangekomen-in-amsterdam-noord~b0b5b09b/?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F
