Barge in allision with ferry

Sun Jan 25 21:57:50 CET 2026 Timsen

On the Danube in Ottensheim (Upper Austria), the "Bavaria 55", while sailing upstream from Linz towards the Ottensheim power plant, suddenly suffered a technical malfunction on the late foremidday of Jan 23, 2026. The vessel became uncontrollable and went adrift. The captain managed to prevent the ship from grounding on the river bank, but he was unable to avoid the ferry, which was docked at the Ottensheim landing. The ship allided with the cable ferry and pushed it upstream away from the landing. Both vessels were damaged in the accident. But while the "Bavaria 55" was able to continue its journey and berthed in Passau on Jan 24, the ferry was so badly damaged that it had to be towed back to the dock by the fire department. Initially it was unclear whether the ferry would be able to resume service on Jan 26. The municipality of Ottensheim announced, however, that it would be out of service indefinitely for repairs. According to current reports, the replacement bus, which transported the 80 students who rely on the ferry across the Danube on Jan 23, will no longer be needed. The operators hoped to have the ferry sufficiently repaired by then to resume operation. Otherwise, the detour via the bridges in Linz or Aschach would be unavoidable. Allision on the Danube

Thu Aug 04 09:28:07 CEST 2011 Timsen

On Aug 3, 2011, the "Bavaria" allided with the lock wall underneath the Protzenweiher bridge. The Dutch self propelled barge "Ferox" moored at the left shore of the Regensburg lock, the "Bavaria 55" followed. But because she was thought to have been moved too quickly into the sluice channel, the Dutch captain created a cross-flow with his main engine the German self-propelled vessel could not catch and was pushed with its bow onto the right side and against the lock wall. Two crew members were slightly injured in the impact. The damage of the "Bavaria 55" amounted to 6,000 €.
