Allision on Welland Canal

The 'BBC Tokyo', enroute from Port Weller to Hamilton, while entering the Welland Canal on the morning of April 16, 2026, allided with the Clarence Street Bridge in Port Colborne, as she maneuvered around the bulk carriers 'Spruceglen' and 'Frontenac', that were moored near the bridge. The stern veered to port side, as the ship tried to slow down amid 30 kph tail winds, which may have contributed to the incident. The ship then hit the bridge tower and was damaged at starboard side near the superstructure. The bridge lift tower noticeably moved during the allision, and the bridge was closed. There were no injuries, and the canal was open again the following night. Repairs of the bridge, which was taken out of service, commenced on April 17. The 'BBC Tokyo' berthed in Hamilton on April 17.
