Indian seafarer died on US sanctioned tanker due to lack of medical help
Nishanth Uirthanathan, an Indian national and Second Officer of the 'Celestial'; passed away due to medical complications aboard the tanker, which was anchored in pos.24° 30' N 066° 5 E at Duqm Port on June 11, 2026. The Indian Embassy has been in continuous contact with the ship management company and was coordinating closely with all concerned stakeholders. Necessary arrangements are being made for the early repatriation of the mortal remains to India. The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) said that the body of 35-year-old Uirthanathan, has been remaining onboard for more than two days without proper refrigeration. The crew used cold water bottles in a desperate attempt to slow decomposition. Uirthanathan fell ill on June 8 and died three day later around 6 p.m. Attempts to secure medical treatment and an emergency evacuation for him were unsuccessful. The communication services at Duqm Port were disrupted during this period. The mortal remains of Nishanth Uirthanathan have finally arrived in port of Duqm Oman on June 15. The ITF offered sincerely gratitude to the Oman Port Authorities, the Indian Embassy Oman, the D.G Shipping, FSUI and ITF Inspector Gulam for their cooperation, support, and efforts in making this possible. US Marines had stopped the 'Celestial' for a suspected attempt to violate the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
