LNG tanker docked in Honningsvåg despite Western sanctions against Russia
The 'Clean Ocean' has docked in the port of Honningsvåg on the morning of May 20, 2026, at approximately 7:30 a.m. and departed again at approximately 8:30 p.m., which marked the first appearance of a Western-sanctioned LNG tanker in Norwegian waters connected to Russia's Arctic gas trade. The tanker was sanctioned by the United Kingdom on Oct 15, 2025. The justification stated that the ship was involved in activities whose “aim or effect is to destabilise Ukraine or to undermine or threaten Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, or independence.” The call at Honningsvåg represened a further escalation of the use of Norwegian coastal waters by ships involved in the Russian LNG trade, which has continued despite Western sanctions imposed after Moscow’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Dozens of LNG tankers supplying the Russian Yamal LNG project have anchored near Honningsvåg in recent years, often awaiting orders, crew changes, or logistical support. However, the appearance of a vessel officially sanctioned by a European country was unprecedented. The tanker left the port the same night, headed to Hong Kong with an ETA as of June 1.
