Ferry suffered steering issue
The 'Coastal Inspiration', serving between Duke Point and Tsawwassen, suffered a steering issue on the early-morning of May 19, 2026. .While the steering transfer control problem has been repaired, the 7:45 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen departed more than two hours late, creating a knock on effect across the schedule. As a result, the 10:15 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen, the 12:45 p.m. sailing from Duke Point, and the 3:15 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen were delayed. B.C. ferries continued to monitor conditions and update schedules throughout the day as operations normalise. Passengers with reservations were advised to arrive within their assigned check-in window to maintain their booking status, which allowed reserved vehicles to be staged ahead of standby traffic and later sailings.
Overheated bearing caused smoke development
On April 21, 2016, rhe 'Coastal Inspiration', operating the Duke Point to Tsawwassen route, was being held at the Duke Point terminal in Nanaimo, while crews investigated a suspected fire in the galley. When crews investigated smoke in the galley, the source was identified as an overheating bearing in the galley ventilator shaft, whichcould be isolated. Shortly after 5 p.m., Transport Canada permitted the vessel to resume sailing two hours behind schedule. The incident had no impact on passenger safety.
Ferry back in service after repairs
The 'Coastal Inspiration' was set to be back in service for the 1 p.m. sailing on Feb 10 from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, after being pulled out for a week because of a mechanical issue. There was a problem with the drive motor number one on the vessel, resulting in the replacement of key components. The 'Salish Heron' was brought into service on the route while the 'Coastal Inspiration' was repaired. There was no indication the mechanical issue was affecting the two other Coastal-class vessels.
