Fishing vessel sank after fire
Three crew members were rescued on the evening of Aug 24, 2026, after the 'Corvo' had caught fire near Estaca de Bares. The Finisterre Coordination Center received an alert at approximately 10:04 p.m. from the ship, which was located eight nautical miles northeast of Estaca de Bares. The three crew members abandoned ship in a life raft after failing to extinguish the flames. The Pesca II helicopter from the Galician Coast Guard Service, the SAR boat 'Salvamar Alioth' (MMSI: 224300690) and the emergency tug 'María Pita' (IMO: 9429118) of Salvamento Marítimo were deployed to assist. The fishing vessel 'Río Xunco' (IMO: 9183178) rescued the three crew members at 10:35 p.m. They were subsequently airlifted to Celeiro (Viveiro), where an ambulance was waiting. The 'María Pita' worked to fight the fire throughout the night, although the fishing vessel eventually sank on Aug 25 at around 5:40 a.m. The tug remained on site to recover wreckage. The emergency was coordinated by the Finisterre Maritime Rescue Center under the direction of the Burela Maritime Captaincy. Crew member found dead in the water near his ship
A 66-year-old crew member of the 'Corvo' was found floating dead in the water near the ship on Nov 12, 2023, in the port of Ondárroa, where the longliner has its official base, which previously operated from the A Coruña town of Muxía and at the end of October was sold to its current owners in Noia (A Coruña). The deceased resided in the province of Lugo. The crew was waiting for a storm to subside so they could go back to work. It is unknown what happened between the time he left the ship and the discovery of his body in the sea. Neither the Basque Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Osalan) nor the Labour Inspection considered the death a work-related death, alleging that the worker was on rest days.
