Barge refloated after lightering half of the cargo
After about half of the cargo of sand had been lightered onto the 'Jacobus' (MMSI: 244650495) by the dredger 'Doris' (MMSI: 211707860), the 'Cycloon' could be refloated from the river bank on Jan 29 at 12.45 p.m. The ship was able to proceed under its own power towards Cologne-Niehl, where it berthed at 1.45 p.m. Divers were tasked to carry out temporary repairs to the leak so that the ship may proceed to ta shipyard for permanent repairs. The 'Jacobus' proceeded towards Koblenz. On Feb 1 the 'Cycloon' berthed in Nijmegen and remained stationary as of Feb 5. Grounded ship to be lightered further
On the morning of Jan 26, experts from the Waterways and Shipping Authority inpsected the 'Cycloon', which was still stuck at river km 681 on the Rhine between Westhoven and Ensen, and the leak more closely. They now assumed that without its cargo, the ship could be raised to the point where the leak would be above the waterline. Then the freighter could more or less continue under its own power without sinking further. The dredger, which has already unloaded 500 tons of sand, was now full and had first to unload the sand. The salvage operations could only continue once it has deposited the lightered cargo ashore. On Jan 27, the crane barge 'Doris' (MMSI: 211707860), which had been mobilized from Mondorf, continued lightering the cargo. On Jan 28, the survey ship 'Gereon' (MMSI: 211664930) was working near the grounding site. On Jan 29, the 'Doris' was shifting the cargo into the holds of the barge 'Jacobus' (MMSI: 244650495). Barge breached in grounding in Cologne
The Cycloon', with two crew members on board, and a cargo of 1300 tons sand en route from Nijmegen to Venlo, ran aground on the left bank of the Rhine at near Cologne-Porz, at river km 681, on Jan 24, 2026, at 3 p.m. and ripped open its keel. Water was entering the freighter. The captain intentionally grounded the ship on a sandbank in pos. 50° 54' N 007° E at Ensen Westhoven to avoid blocking the fairway. There was a considerable amount of water in the foreship when emergency services of the Cologne Fire Brigade arrived. The bow cabin and adjacent rooms were flooded approximately 2.5 meters high. The ire boats from Cologne and Bonn were on scene to pump out the water. At peak times, the two boats were pumping out over 10 tons of water per minute. A dredger was also deployed to unload the cargo. Approximately 500 tons of sand were removed. Securing the ship continued into the night. The fire departments were supported by two boats from the German Life Saving Association (DLRG), whose boats transported personnel, supplies, and equipment to the scene. The Cologne Fire Department deployed 23 personnel, the Bonn Fire Department five, and the DLRG 21. The operation was concluded at 11:50 p.m. The ship was grounded on its whole length and could not be removed from the sandbank for the time being. Once refloated by specialised companies, the intention was to tow the 'Cycloon' to Cologne- Mülheim. The salvage work was expected to take several days.
