Safety improvements after lifting system accident

Mon Jun 15 09:20:47 CEST 2026 Timsen

The offshore drilling firm Odfjell made safety improvements after an accident with a lifting system caused a "significant risk of harm" to workers on the 'Deepsea Atlantic', while it was working in the Rosebank field, approximately 80 miles northwest of Shetland, on April 18, 2026. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said Odfjell did not ensure there were properly working failsafes on the rig's system for lifting and lowering loads in the drilling derrick. No-one was injured and there was no environmental damage, but a blowout prevention valve and 400 metres of riser pipework were lost to the sea floor. The system's four electric motors tripped, causing a loss of control with a load of more than 600 tonnes on the hook. The system's emergency disc brakes were applied but these failed to prevent the load from descending uncontrollably, pulling a wire rope from its drum. The rope flayed, damaging the structure and equipment of the drilling derrick. The HSE issued an improvement notice for two breaches of the 1974 Health and Safety at Work Act, as well as two breaches of regulations relating to the use of equipment. It said the incident posed a significant risk of harm to persons from falling debris in various areas of the rig .

A fire broke out on the "Deepsea Atlantic" which was working for Statoil at the Johan Sverdrup field around 140 kilometers west of Stavanger on Jan 4, 2017, just before 6 a.m. Flames were observed flames in the service loop in the derrick of the rig. The crew were mustered according to the instructions at such events. After the fire was first extinguished, it flared up again. After about an hour the situation was under control. The rig not drilled when the incident took place. The case was reported to the Petroleumstylsnet and will be followed up by Statoil and Odfjell Drilling. The field is under development and production was started by the semi submersible rig, which is being operated by Odfjell Drilling, in November 2016.
