Attacked tanker was illegally flying Mozambican flag

Wed Jul 29 08:53:39 CEST 2026 Timsen

Mozambique’s maritime regulator has denied that the 'Disha' was registered in Mozambique or entitled to fly the country’s flag. The Institute of Maritime Transport (ITRANSMAR) launched an investigation, after checks of the national ship registry found no record of the vessel ever having been registered under Mozambican law. The available evidence indicated that the tanker was flying the Mozambican flag illegally and fraudulently, describing the apparent misuse of the country’s flag as a serious breach of international maritime law. The authority was working with relevant international organisations and the authorities of the states concerned to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible for the unauthorised use of the flag. The vessel’s age, together with Mozambique’s assertion that it was fraudulently flying that country’s flag, was likely to prompt questions over whether the tanker was part of the wider network of vessels used to conceal ownership and trading activities associated with Russia’s shadow fleet. ITRANSMAR warned that the fraudulent use of a national flag undermines confidence in international ship registration systems, threatened maritime security and weakens the integrity of the principle that every merchant vessel must sail under the lawful jurisdiction of a recognised flag State. Mozambique remains committed to cooperating with the international maritime community in protecting the safety of navigation and upholding international maritime law. Ahead of the attack on July 24, audio recordings were made from a public VHF maritime radio in which a caller believed to be a US military operator, gave several warnings to a merchant ship that “You are non-compliant by continuing towards Iran. You have been warned several times. I am preparing to fire at your engine room.” The crew were then given 15 minutes to clear the engine room. The 'Disha' had previously crossed the Strait of Hormuz safely on June 15 in loaden condition enroute from Qatar to Dahej port in Gujarat. It would appear from .

LPG tanker on fire after being struck by projectile

Sat Jul 25 12:37:30 CEST 2026 Timsen

The ' Disha' was attacked while sailing within Iranian territorial waters near the Strait of Hormuz on July 24, 2026. The vessel was struck by a projectile or missile of unknown origin, and a fire broke out near the smokestack. No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Furthermore, no official information has been released regarding the extent of the damage sustained by the ship. There were 28 Indian nationals on board. The Indian Embassy in Tehran confirmed that all crew members were safe, with no injuries or fatalities reported, and stated that communication with relevant authorities was ongoing to monitor developments.

Disha first LPG tanker to transit Strait of Hormuz after peace agreement

Mon Jun 15 11:39:06 CEST 2026 Timsen

On June 15, immediately after the peace agreement between the US and Iran, the 'Disha' passed through the Strait of Hormuz after being stuck there for over three months as the first LNG vessel after the agreement, being one of the first merchant ships to pass the strait after it reopened. The 'Disha' had loaded its cargo in the port of Ras Laffan, Qatar, between March 1 and 2 and remained anchored west of the Strait of Hormuz since. The tanker was now en route to the port of Dahej . Nevertheless, ship traffic through Hormuz remains restricted. Shipping companies stated that they neeed more time to assess the situation, particularly regarding mine clearance and maritime safety measures, before resuming operations on a large scale. The agreement between the US and Iran was expected to be signed on (June 19 in Switzerland. Global oil prices fell immediately by about 4 % on June 15. An estimated 155 to 215 oil and chemical tankers were stranded in the Persian Gulf since the outbreak of the hostilities on Feb 28.
