Fire in engine room in Wilmington

Wed Aug 12 11:41:07 CEST 2026 Timsen

Firefighters were working to put out flames from a fire in the generator of the 'Dole Colombia' at the Port of Wilmington on Aug 10, 2026, a few hours after the arrival from Moin. The ship's CO2 suppression system had been deployed by the crew before the fire crews were dispatched at approximately 12:12 p.m. to the port. First arriving companies reported smoke showing from the ship. The responders were met by the ship’s Captain who reported a fire in a generator in the engine room. A 2nd alarm was struck, bringing in all on-duty WFD companies, as well as mutual aid from surrounding departments to the scene and to cover city fire stations. The Incident Command confirmed with the ship’s captain that the engine room had been sealed and the ship’s on board extinguishment system had been activated. The captain also confirmed that all crew had been accounted for and was safe. The fire fighters then deployed hose lines to the areas around the engine room to monitor conditions and confirm that the extinguishment system was holding the fire. Once it was confirmed that the extinguishment system was functioning as intended and holing the fire, the incident was placed under control and units began to be released. The fire department along with the Coast Guard and the ship’s crew continued to monitor the engine room temperatures and conditions throughout the day. One WFD firefighter was transported for evaluation. Units responding: 1st Alarm: Engines 2,1,3; Squad 4; Ladders 2,1; Battalion Chiefs 2,1,5. Deputy Chief 2, F-1 (Chief of Department ). Ambulance 2, New Castle County Paramedics 2nd Alarm: Engines 6,5, 20 (Holloway Terrace), 22(Minquadale); Ladder 17 (Five Points); Rescue 23 (Newport). Marine units: 18 (New Castle), 15 (Delaware City), and 29 (Port Penn). It was the second time that the 'Dole Colombia' suffered an engine room fire at the Port of Wilmington, the previous one on the evening of June 31, 2021, while the reefer was leaving port, forcing it to return to the berth to combat the blaze. The fixed firefighting system was used to bring it under control. Fire in engine room

Fri Jul 02 09:29:53 CEST 2021 Timsen

In the evening of June 30, 2021, a fire broke out in the engine room of the 'Dole Colombia' in the port of Wilmington, Philadelphia. The fire started on the Christina River, short time after the ship with 30 crew members on board had unmoored en route to Santa Marta. The crew sealed off the engine room and activated the CO2 fire suppression system and managed to put out the fire. The ship then berthed again. No injures were reported. The US Coast Guard (USCG), Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Wilmington Fire Department, and New Castle Fire Department responded after the vessel contacted USCG Sector Delaware Bay at around midnight. The USCG dispatched a boat from Station Philadelphia to establish a safety zone, while responders from Wilmington Fire Department, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Wilmington Fire Department and New Castle Fire Department worked to ensure the fire was contained. As of July 2, the vessel was still in port.
