All w7 crew members rescued from blazing fishing vessel
The US Coast Guard coordinated the rescue of 27 crew members from the 'Drennec', after the vessel experienced a fire approximately 527 miles southwest of the Galapagos Islands, on Aug 20, 2026. At approximately 8 p.m. Thursday, Coast Guard Southwest District watchstanders received multiple distress alerts from the Drennec, including an emergency beacon alert and Iridium alert from a Garmin inReach device. They established contact with Garmin Response who confirmed that the vessel had caught fire, and that all 27 crew members had abandoned ship into a life raft. Using the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER), the Coast Guard watchstanders reached out to nearby vessels, alerting them to the situation and requesting assistance. Two good Samaritan vessels, the container ship 'Oluf Maersk' (IMO: 9251626), enroute to Balboa, and the fishing vessel 'Ricky A' (IMO: 7347926), diverted to assist. The latter recovered all castaways from the lifeboat, while the 'Oluf Maersk' remained on scene to assist. On Aug 21 at 10:15 a.m. all fishermen were reported safely aboard the 'Ricky A', who would transport them to Guayaquil.
