Dilapidated shrimper lifted out of the water to prevent it from sinking
The 'Erna-GRE 2' from Greetsiel has been lifted out of the water with the help of a mobile crane on Dec 11. The salvage operation was ordered by the Lower Water Authority of the Friesland district in coordination with the port authority N-Ports. Since Dec 8, a scrapping company had been working to separate the wheelhouse from the hull and remove the engine. The Hooksiel fire department had deployed oil booms around the vessel on Dec 5 to contain diesel and oil leaking from the hull and prevent contamination of the Hooksmeer lake. In the past, the local fire department had repeatedly been called upon to assist with pumping to prevent the "Erna" from sinking. The shrimper had been moored in the Hooksiel inland waterway since autumn 2023. The fisherman initially wanted to sell the cutter, built in 1972 by Bültjer in Ditzum/Ems, and later even give it away, but the backlog of repairs and maintenance costs were too great. Representatives from the water police and the Lower Water Authority of the Friesland district met on-site on Dec 5 with the port authority N-Ports to discuss further action. Since the possibility of the cutter sinking could not be ruled out, the authorities decided to have the vessel scrapped before major environmental damage occurred, as a safety measure being taken by the Friesland district against the ship's owner. Accordingly, the owner is bearing the full costs of the project. In 2011, the cutter played a leading role in the ZDF comedy "Fischer fischt Frau" (Fisherman Fishes Woman) with Peter Heinrich Brix; in 1997, it served as a film set for the NDR production "Heimatgeschichten – Das Erbe von Greetsiel" (Homeland Stories – The Legacy of Greetsiel) with Dieter Pfaff; and in 2003, it appeared in the Tatort episode "Sonne und Sturm" (Sun and Storm) with Maria Furtwängler. Fishing cutter leaked oil in Hooksiel
On the afternoon of Dec 5, 2026, oil was leaking from the "Erna-GRE 2" at the southern end of the Hooksiel lock, prompting a response from the Hooksiel Volunteer Fire Department, which attended with several units. Oil booms were laid out around the ship to keep the oil from spreading. The dilapidated shrimp cutter has been moored in the Hooksiel inland waterway since Oct2023 and was now to be lifted out of the water after repeated fire department interventions due to oil leaks. The water police, the Friesland lower water authority, and the port authority N-Ports have jointly decided to haul the vessel ashore this week to prevent environmental damage. The owner, from Greetsiel, was unable to find a buyer for the vessel, which was built in 1972. N-Ports announced plans to scrap the cutter, which has been the scene of several call-outs for the Hooksiel fire department, as water repeatedly seeped into the hull, threatening to sink the ship.
