Near miss of two projectiles off Ras Tanura

Tue Mar 31 11:53:31 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Express Rome', operated by the New York-listed, Greek shipowner Danaos, reported a near miss from two projectiles about 22 nautical miles off Ras Tanura on March 30, 2026. The crew were reported to be safe. The Islamic Republican Guard Corps (IRGC) had already claimed to have attacked the vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on March 11, however the incident remained unconfirmed. Its port rotation prior the conflict in the Middle East was consistent with the company’s Middle East, Gulf, and Asia (MEGA) service. In July 2025, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in July sanctioned 16 container ships the company had on charter over links with Iran. SeaLead acted to quickly terminate the charters on the 16 vessels.

On March 11, 2026, the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed to have struck the 'Express Rome', which had ignored warnings against transiting the Strait of Hormuz, however there is no confirmation of this attack having taken place. The ship has been anchored off Jebel Ali in pos. 25° 13' N 054° 35 E since Feb 28 on its way from Port Klang.
