Fire in cargo hold in Cardiff

A major fire broke out on board the 'Federal Welland', carrying 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal, at the Queen Alexandra Dock in Cardiff on Aug 25, 2026, drawing a large response from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The fire crews deployed rescue tenders, aerial platforms, firefighting tugs, and drones. The cargo of scrap metal had caught fire. All crew members were safe and accounted for. The tug 'VB Yorkshireman' (IMO: 9655884) was working alongside, deploying her water cannon. The fire generated significant plumes of smoke, with areas including Cardiff Bay, the city centre, and Penarth potentially affected. Public Health Wales has advised residents and businesses in affected areas to keep windows and doors closed until the smoke has cleared. Associated British Ports, the owners and operators of the Port of Cardiff, supported the emergency response and were working closely with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and other partner agencies. The burning scrap metal was removed from the cargo holds onto the quay with cranes and then hosed down by the fire fighters of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. After the cargo hold fire was finally put out, as of Aug 31, the work continued to remove the cargo of scrap metal, which was then dropped onto the quayside. Water ingress in double bottom

The 'Federal Welland', coming from Antwerp, suffered a slight water ingress in its double bottom no.1 at port side, on Oct 12, 2019. The ship was authorized to proceed towards Trois-Rivières, Quebec, for further investigations, where it berthed on Oct 15 at 6 a.m. It left the port on OCt 23 at 4.30 a.m. and proceeded to Montreal.
