Collision off Singapore
The 'First Margaux', enroute from Kemen, was in collision with the Chinese fishing vessel 'Lu Qing Yuan Yu 108' (IMO: 8688472), with 40 crew members on board, in the Bay of Bengal in the Singapore Strait on Sep 20, 2026. Both vessels had departed from their respective anchorages east of Singapore and entered the westbound traffic separation scheme. The bulk carrier was sailing three knots faster and trying to pass, when it collided with the fishing vessel from astern. It was struck at starboard side, causing it to list heavily in the water. The 'First Margaux' was acting as the overtaking vessel in the correct TSS lane. However, her maneuvering room to starboard was restricted by the presence of a third vessel, the tanker -Gas Iris', entering the lane. While the bulk carrier could have potentially avoided the collision with a slight turn to port, the fishing vessel also appeared to lack proper bridge watchkeeping. Being on a collision course, the smaller vessel had ample time to take evasive action but failed to do so. The fishing vessel was towed to the Raffles reserve anchorage to assess its condition. Some essential crew members remained on board to ensure the towage, while the Singapore Civil Defence Force brought the other crew members ashore. The maritime authority issued navigational warnings to keep other vessels clear of the towage operation. The fishing vessel was also escorted by an authority boat while entering port. The bulk carrier continued westbound at a speed of knots for about two hours, before stopping, circling back and anchoring. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was investigating the incident.
