Grounding at Breivikeidet
The 'Folkestad' ran aground on oct 22, 2026, at around 1.45 p.m. in the small boat harbour at Breivikeidet. The ferry entered the harbour right next to the ferry quay outside Tromsø. It ended up almost completely on the shore, becoming firmly stuck. There were 32 passengers and a crew of five on board. No one was injured. The crew reported a technical failure beforehand. The police assisted as the lifeboat 'Klaveness Marine' evacuated the passengers from the ferry. At 5:20 p.m. all passengers had been brought safely ashore. The boat also attempted to pull the ferry off the shallows, but was unable to do so. A tug was expected to arrive shortly after 6:00 p.m. The crew was assessing how to get all the vehicles off the ferry once it has been pulled free. One option is to bring the vehicles ashore at Breivikeidet; another was to bring them to Tromsø. The crew was being questioned, and that the police were working to determine the cause of the grounding. All ferry services on the route were suspended. The designated reserve ferry 'Lauvstad' was called to operate from Svensby on the morning of Oct 23. The 'Folkestad' was refloated on the afternoon and left Breivikeidet at 10.15 p.m., headed to Ørndalen in northernmost Tromsø, where it berthed on Oct 23 at around 3 a.m. for repairs at Skattøra, which were expected to take two weeks.
