Grounding on the Rhine
On the afternoon of June 4, 2026, the 'Freienstein' ran aground on the Rhine close to Rees, enroute from Duisburg to Antwerp. The incident at river kilometer 844, just before Grietherort, has led to massive disruptions on the river, as 33 ships, 13 sailing downstream and 20 ships bound upstream, had to wait. The ship was stuck about 30 metres below the right river bank. It was presumed that it had veered off course and, due to its draft, became stuck in the shallow waters of the bank. Initial attempts to free the ship, a few hours after the grounding, failed. Two cargo ships worked together to pull the 'Freienstein' off again. They attempted to free the vessel four times without success. Another attempt was made on June 5 at midday. This time it was successful, and at 1:55 p.m. the 'Freienstein' was back in deeper water: Heavy rainfall overnight and a slight rise of the water level made it easier to free the ship this time. The Duisburg Water Police (WSP) were investigating whether strong gusts of wind played a role in the grounding. The 'Freienstein' has suffered no damage and was able to continue its voyage downstream. It finally arrived in the port of destination on June 6.
