Shetland Islands Council announced changes to inter-island ferry timetables for Unst, Fetlar and Whalsay
The Shetland Islands Council has announced timetable changes affecting services to and from, Unst, Fetlar and Whalsay on Jan 19, 2026. Dry dock issues have forced a reduction in inter-island ferry services as the 'Geira' was delayed leaving drydock, which meant the Bluemull Sound services would run to a single vessel operation from Feb 2 to Feb 19. Anyone with prior bookings for this period had to rebook, as the booking office was unable to move existing bookings due to the change in timetable. On the Whalsay route, the 'Hendra' was go to dry dock on March 2. With the 'Fivla' unavailable to provide cover, the service would also be operating a single vessel service from March 2 to March 12.
Geira suffered mechanical damage
The Bluemull Sound ferry ran a single vessel service on July 8, 2019, after the "Geira" suffered a mechanical failure on board. The ferry sailed from Hamars Ness on July 12 at 2 p.m. and arrived in Gutcher at 4.40 p.m.
Ferry sidelined due to engine trouble
The "Geira" developed a problem with her main port engine on Jan 8, 2018, and was sidelined in Lerwick. Engineers were investigating the cause of the problem and the vessel has been withdrawn from service in the Bluemull Sound. The SIC has amended its timetable and bookings were being suspended. After repairs she sailed from Lerwick on Jan 28 at 1.30 p.m.
