Oil spill from damaged tanker widened, beaches were closed
The oil spill from the 'Gem No. 2' off the coast of the United Arab Emirates has widened, satellite images showed, triggering more beach closures and raising environmental concerns.Images from the European Union's Copernicus satellite observation network dated Oct 24 showed the oil spill was reaching close to the shores of the northern Umm Al Quwain emirate, with dark layers of oil spreading at sea and along its coastline. Efforts were underway to contain the oil leaking from the tanker offshore. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment was conducting an environmental assessment. Authorities across various northern emirates responded to the spill by restricting access to coastal areas. All beaches and coastal areas around the city of Umm Al Quwain were temporarily closed, while authorities in neighbouring Sharjah shut access to Al Hamriyah Beach as a precaution. In Ras Al Khaimah all beaches in the emirate were closed until further notice on Oct 24. On Oct 30 thd authorities reported that the oil leakage could be stopped. Oil spill believed to come from stricken tanker
Windward AI had detected an oil spill on Oct 20, saying they believed it was coming from one of the VLCCs, which was about 16 nautical miles off Umm Al Quwain. The slick has spread more than 22 miles and was covering an area of more than 60 square miles. The spill was linked to the 'Gem No. 2', which was struck on Oct 9. The VLCC was 13 nautical miles west of Al Jazeera when it was struck.
Tanker abandoned after struck by projectiles
The 'Gem No. 2', operating under charter to Trafigura, was initially struck by an unidentified projectile about 13 nautical miles west of Al Jazeera in the United Arab Emirates on Oct 9, 2026, at 2.30 p.m. As a rssult, a massive fire broke out on the port side foreship, which could, however, be knocked down within 25 minutes by the ship'sown extinguishing systems. On Oct 10 at 10 a.m., after the superintendent arrived, and while the crew prepared to move the tanker to the inner anchorage, it was struck again by four drones within three minutes. The projectiles hit at the foreship, aft, starboard side and near a pump room. A large fire broke out and engulfed the superstructure. When the situation became critical, the captain ordered to abandon ship. The 22 Indian crew members went into the port side lifeboats and were rescued by a boat of the UAE Coastguard. Authorities were investigating the incident. No claim of responsibility has been reported, and the source of the projectiles has not been established.
