Russian convoy entered Baltic Sea

Sat Oct 03 12:44:45 CEST 2026 Timsen

The roro cargo m/v 'Sparta' (IMO: 9268710) and the 'General Skobelev' have entered the Baltic Sea and were monitored by the patrol vessel 'Neustadt' of the German Federal Police on Oct 2 off Fehmarn island, as well as the Danish Navy. The 'Sparta' had an ETA as of Oct 4 in Kaliningrad, and the 'General Skobelev' an ETA as of Oct 6 in St. Petersburg. Crucially, these vessels were the remnants of a larger logistics convoy returning from the Russian naval facility in Tartus, which recently transited the English Channel alongside the fleet oiler 'Akademik Pashin'. The separation of this convoy pointed to a logistical friction point for the Russian Baltic Fleet. The frigate 'Admiral Grigorovich', which departed Baltiysk on Sep 19, has not yet relieved the forward-deployed frigate 'Neustrashimy'. Instead of accompanying the 'Sparta' and 'General Skobelev' into the Baltic, the fleet oiler has remained stationed in the North Sea. Probably the 'Akademik Pashin' broke off from the convoy to provide essential at-sea replenishment to the 'Neustrashimy', allowing the frigate to extend its deployment while the rotation schedule remains disrupted. As the 'Sparta' and the 'General Skobelev' continued their transit toward Baltiysk/St. Petersburg, they executed a deliberate navigational deviation in the Kattegat:Both vessels avoided the standard entry corridor south of Skagen, opting for a wider offshore trajectory. The 'General Skobelev' was operating under active EU and UK (OFSI) sanctions. By navigating exclusively through the Exclusive Economic Zone, the vessels bypassed the Danish 12-nautical-mile territorial waters, mitigating the risk of direct inspections or physical interceptions tied to the sanction regime. This unconventional transit has drawn direct responses from regional NATO maritime forces, which are currently operating in high density due to regional exercises: The Royal Danish Navy (Forsvaret) detached the Diana-class patrol vessel HDMS 'Najaden (P523)' to shadow the inbound vessels, positioning itself in strict proximity to the convoy, mirroring its speed and course to monitor the 'General Skobelev's ingress into the Baltic safely.

Russian convoy transited Strait of Gibraltar

Wed Sep 23 22:25:26 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Russian destroyer RFS 'Admiral Levchenko' escorted the 'Sparta', 'General Skobelev' and the 'Akademik Pashin', which transited through the Strait of Gibraltar westbound on Sep 23, returning home from the Russian Naval and military base at Tartus. Russia still has a major military complex in Syria.

Sancitoned Russian vessels tracked in UK saters

Sun Aug 30 17:44:13 CEST 2026 Timsen

Royal Navy warships have tracked sanctioned Russian vessels in UK waters between Aug 21 and Aug 23, 2026, involving the Portsmouth-based HMS 'Duncan' and HMS 'Severn' shadowing two Russian Navy warships and two sanctioned cargo ships as they travelled through the North Sea and English Channel. A Merlin helicopter from HMS 'St Albans', also involved in the operation, supported the effort, extending surveillance as the vessels neared the Strait of Dover. The ships used radar and other sensors to closely monitor the vessels throughout their passage. The task group included the Russian Navy destroyer 'Admiral Levchenko', which was escorting the two sanctioned cargo vessels 'General Skobelev', enroute to Port Said with and ETA as of Sep 5, and the 'Sparta', enroute from Kronshtadt towards the Mediterranean. Russia also deployed the frigate 'Neustrashimy' during the operation. At the same time, the patrol ship HMS 'Mersey' was separately shadowing Russian replenishment vessel 'Akademik Pashin', enroute to Port Said with an ETA as of Sep 8. The Royal Navy ships tracked the Russian group from the North Sea into the English Channel, before handing over duties to a NATO ally off the coast of France nea Ouessant.
