Thu Jul 16 12:20:56 CEST 2026 Timsen

The body of the Indian marine engineer Heramb Karmarkar, 30, from Pune in western India, who had been missing since the 'GFS Galaxy' was attacked off the coast of Oman, has been recovered, bringing a tragic end to a three-day search. According to India’s Forward Seamen’s Union, Karmarkar’s family was informed by the shipping company on the evening of July 14, that Oman’s Coastguard had recovered his body. The discovery came nearly 60 hours after news first emerged that the marine engineer was missing. His mortal remains were currently with the Oman Navy. Herambh had been on the vessel for the last five months and was due to sign off soon. The remaining 23 crew members aboard the vessel, including ten other Indian nationals, had been rescued shortly after the attack. One Indian crew member missing after Itanian attack - ship abandoned, Strait of Hormuz closed again

Tue Jul 14 12:49:37 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'GFS Galaxy', enroute from Jebel Ali with 24 crew members, among them 11 Indian nationals, was attacked with a cruise missile by the Iran in the Strait of Hormuz on July 11, 2026, at 10.40 p.m. The attack, which occurred about nine nautical miles east of Oman, 4.4 nautical miles off the coast of the Musandam Governorate, caused a fire in the stern area and significant damage to the vessel's engine room, leaving the vessel dead in the water. The ship had a crew of 24, comprising of 11 Indians nationals, four Ukrainians, four Filipinos, three Indonesians and two Sri Lankans. Immediately after the attack, two sailors were missing. One of the crew members was then evacuated with some injuries from the engine room. 22 crew members abandoned the vessel and boarded a lifeboat. They were rescued by the Royal Navy of Oman under the coordination of the Oman Maritime Security Centre. Three crew members gad suffered burns and minor injuries and received medical care in an Oman hospital. One Indian crewmember, the third engineer of the vessel, remained missing. Indian authorities, along with Onami authorities, were closely monitoring the situation and continue the search and rescue operation to locate the missing crew member. SAR operations for the missing seafarer were ongoing. Iran stated that the ship had ignored warnings to turn back from Iranian authorities. Earlier, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said thatcit had fired warning shots at a vessel that had turned off its transponder in the Strait of Hormuz, attempting to cross via what it termed an “illegal route”. The U.S. military in turn has launched a third round of airstrikes against Iran as a response. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard said it has closed the strait again to all ship traffic “until further notice". India condemned the attack on the ship, which was formerly sailing as 'Crete I', 'Ilse Wulff' and ''Al Khor'. Its listed owner is the Wulff Reederei of Glückstadt. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern over the continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the region and reiterated its call for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution to restore peace and stability. The MEA noted that the Indian Embassy in Oman was closely monitoring developments and coordinating with Omani authorities in the SAR efforts, while thanking the Omani government for its support. It stressed that the targeting of commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must end and that free and unimpeded navigation through international waterways, in accordance with international law, must be restored without delay.
