Detained ship damaged in Odesa

Wed Aug 12 22:45:29 CEST 2026 Timsen

On Aug 12, 2026, the 'Gladius' was struck by a Russian drone at a quay in the port of Odesa. It hit the superstructure, which was engulfed by flames as a result and severely damaged. Thankfully, everyone on board was safe. Tugs assisted in putting out the fire. The ship had been detained at the port since Dec 10, 2025. Video: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1b28NmsLSH/

Master facing up to five years in prison for trading with Russian occupied ports

Wed Apr 08 09:27:32 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has conducted a further investigation into the captain of the 'Gladius', which was detained in the port of Odesa in Dec 2025, and served a notice of suspicion of violation of the procedure for entering and leaving the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. Additional evidence has been found that the master entered the blocked seaports of temporary occupied Crimea and exported cargoes. He was detained in December 2025 along with his ship, while it was loading a batch of steel pipes for export. During searches of the vessel, the SBU found voyage plans, pilot cards, cartographic materials, and radio communication logs, which provided evidence of the entry into the ports of Crimea and contended, that the ship had been in Sevastopol at least seven times for the export of agricultural products, including exporting almost 7,000 tons of grain in Jan 2021 to North Africa. Evidence showed the same master had entered Kerch in late 2024.2,000 tons of liquefied petroleum gas was loaded for export to third countries. The master had allegedly changed flags and turned off AIS transmissions. While the 'Gladius' is sailing under the flag of Guinea-Bissau, the vessel is controlled by Russian interests. The master is facing up to five years in prison for entering and leaving the occupied ports, which are blocked by Ukraine and under sanctions limits for the EU. There were 16 other crew members, also Middle Eastern citizens, aboard the ship when it was detained. Russian shadow ship detained in Odesa for illegally transporting Ukrainian agricultural products from Russian occupied Crimea

Thu Dec 11 11:05:40 CET 2025 Timsen

On Dec 10, 2025, Ukraine’s security services have detained the 'Gladius' after it arrived in Odesa to load steel pipes. Investigators have uncovered extensive evidence tying the vessel to past illegal calls at the temporarily Russian-occupied Crimea, being part of Russia's shadow fleet and illegally transporting Ukrainian agricultural products. At the time of the detention, besides the captain there were 16 crew members on board, all citizens of several Middle Eastern countries. Law enforcement officers seized voyage plans, navigation charts and communication logs containing evidence of calls to ports in occupied territories. Investigators have opened criminal cases on charges including financing actions against Ukraine's territorial integrity, treason, violations of transport regulations and unlawful entry to/exit from temporarily occupied territory. The vessel has been seized with a view to its potential transfer to Ukraine's Asset Recovery and Management Agency. The ship, formerly known as the 'Aminah Star', switched both name and flag as recently as Oct 30. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed these rapid identity changes were part of a pattern by the vessel’s sanctioned owner to obscure its operations following blacklisting by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council. The 'Gladius' had called at Sevastopol at least seven times prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion, exporting agricultural products from Crimea in violation of Ukrainian law. In one documented instance in January 2021, the ship loaded more than 6,900 tonnes of wheat at Sevastopol for export to North Africa. The 'Gladius' entered the Black Sea on Dec 1 before switching off its AIS transponder on Dec 2 while approaching the Ukrainian coast. The SBU has transferred the case to Ukraine’s Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA), which will determine the vessel’s future through the courts. ARMA has stepped up disposal of seized ships this year, moving to sell the 'Usko MFU' and 'Anka' in recent months and completing the sale of a Russian tanker involved in a 2018 Kerch Strait incident.
