Decontamination started after fire was put out

Fri May 29 13:24:26 CEST 2026 Timsen

The fire aboard the 'GNV Phoenix' broke out on the seventh deck of the ro/pax ferry, which was docked at La Nuova Meccanica Navale for maintenance near the city's Piazza Mercato. All 85 people on board at the time, all workers or crew members, were able to evacuate safely from board, and no injuries were reported. As a precaution, the Naples health authority issued a shelter-in-place order, advising against going outdoors or using ventilation systems. The regional environmental agency ARPAC reported that air quality readings have so far indicated no issues. Crews worked into the morning of MAy 28 and successfully prevented the blaze from spreading throughout the vessel. After the fire was put out, decontamination efforts were underway. The port of Naples has remained open to marine traffic, except for Piers 29 and 30, where firefighting operations were active. The ferry, previously named 'Athara', was formerly owned by Tirrenia. Ithas no record of overseas port state control inspections.

Fire fighting operations concluded after 12 hours

Thu May 28 21:52:18 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'GNV Phoenix' continued to burn for several hours, with complex extinguishing operations, extremely high temperatures and smoke inside the hull, before the fire could be finally extinguished on the morning of May 28. Several firefighter teams had been working through the night to contain the flames. Dense, acrid, black smoke has enveloped Naples from San Giovanni to Chiaia, Vomero, and Arenella. The fire, which started in the stern area, caused extremely high temperatures on the hull, making containment and extinguishing operations particularly complex. The Fire Department had been in continuous action since the alarm was raised on May 27 at around 6:50 p.m. Special units, supported by firefighting tugs and a patrol boat, have been deployed. Operations continued throughout the night. For safety reasons, the Port Authority has ordered a temporary closure of maritime traffic between Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa, resulting in a diversion or delay for incoming vessels. The Prefecture has convened the Rescue Coordination Center, within which ARPAC - the Campania Regional Agency for Environmental Protection - has begun monitoring for dioxins, furans, and polychlorinated biphenyls dispersed in the atmosphere, using a high-flow sampler positioned near the pier where the ship was berthed. The initial data released by the network of fixed monitoring stations, updated between 9 and 10 p.m. did not indicate any abnormal values in the city related to the fire. While awaiting updated monitoring, the Municipal Administration—in agreement with the Local Health Authority Napoli 1 Centro—urged residents to observe the following precautionary guidelines for residents in the areas surrounding the Molo del Carmine Pier and areas potentially exposed to winds they were asked to keep doors, windows, shutters, chimneys, ventilation vents, and any other openings to the outside closed. Fire on ferry in Naples

Thu May 28 11:37:15 CEST 2026 Timsen

A fire broke out aboard the 'GNV Phoenix', which was docked at the Port of Naples for maintenance work, on May 27 at 7 p.m. The ferrywas berthed at Pier 29/30, near the Mekkanica Navale shipyard. The vessel broadcast a radio Mayday signal reporting a fire on board and requesting assistance from the Port Authority as well as emergency services. The blaze originated on the lower decks of the ship, or possibly directly within the engine room. A column of smoke rose from the vessel, visible from various parts of the city. A strong, acrid odor could also be detected throughout the port area. Tugs were the first to arrive on the scene, immediately commencing firefighting operations using their onboard pumps. They were subsequently joined by a Coast Guard patrol boat and land-based firefighters. At present, there were no reports of injuries or casualties among the crew members or the external contractors working on board. The latter were successfully evacuated in time. The Port of Naples has remained operational; however, to facilitate rescue and firefighting efforts, the Port Authority has restricted access to the waters immediately adjacent to Piers 29 and 30. Currently, the three tugs ' Tarentum', 'Vivara' and 'Galluzzo' and one patrol boat were actively engaged in operations at the scene. The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage to the vessel have yet to be determined. A thorough assessment may only be conducted once firefighting operations have concluded and the affected areas have cooled down. An emergency meeting of the Emergency Coordination Center was convened on the evening by the Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Naples, Laura Lieto; the Councilor for Health and Green Spaces of the Municipality of Naples, Vincenzo Santagata; representatives from the Port Authority; the Fire Department; the Director of the Naples Provincial Department of ARPAC (Regional Agency for Civil Protection), Dario Mirella; the Director of ASL Napoli 1 Centro (the local housing association), Gaetano Gubitosa; the Director of COE 118 (the emergency call center), Giuseppe Galano; as well as representatives from the Port Authority, the Fire Department, and the Guardia di Finanza. The ARPAC planned to install a sampler for the detection of dioxins and furans to monitor air quality. Built in 2002 for the Tirrenia fleet, the ferry joined the GNV fleet in April 2026, having previously served in the Moby Group fleet under the name 'Athara'. The ferry was scheduled to enter service in the coming weeks, renamed “AF Phoenix,” chartered to the Ancona-based company Adria Ferries, to operate the regular route between Bari and Durrës.
