Gorch Fock won race of sister ships

Tue Jul 14 17:29:19 CEST 2026 Timsen

On July 11, 2026, the 'Gorch Fock' has won the first race of the Five Sister Trophy Regatta from New York to Boston against its identical sister ships in 50 years. After around 7.5 hours, the tall ship was the first to arrive in the Five Sister Trophy regatta. The around 60 nautical miles long race course from New York to Boston covered the challenging sea area around Cape Cod. Under full sail, the competitors started out neck and neck, buanthe 'Gorch Fock' soon pulled ahead. As the winds strengthened to more than 25 knots, she was able to keep all sails flying. She made an average of about eight knots to finish in seven hours 27 minutes. CO Frigate Captain Elmar Bornkessel said in a statement that the ship's crew had prepared for the race with extensive training, reduced unnecessary weight, and shifted ballast to induce a slight leeward heel. The German crew arrived 38 minutes before the 'Eagle' (USA), an hour before the 'Sagres' (Portugal) and two hours before the 'Mircea' (Romania).  Just like its three remaining active sister ships, the 'Gorch Fock' was in New York on the occasion of the USA celebrating 250 years of independence.  The vessels that were built by Blohm+Voss competed against one another for the second time. The first race was held 50 years ago, when the USA celebrated its 200th Independence Day. Sailing ship diverted to Brest due to lack of fuel

Tue Mar 28 11:03:13 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Gorch Fock' had to divert to the port of Brest on March 27, one week after leaving its homeport Kiel, due to a lack of diesel fuel. The ship had the wind ahead since and hardly chance to set sail. At the weekend it became clear, that the fuel would not last to reach the port of La Coruna. In the afternoon of March 26 the ship changed course in the English Channel and arrived in Brest on March 27 at 3 p.m. After the supply was completed, it left the port again at 7.40 p.m. the same day. The ship has an ETA at La Coruna as of April 3 and will continue its sail training voyage on April 7 to Cadiz.
