Ship still detained in Progreso

Mon Oct 05 10:43:08 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Mexican Navy continued to detain the 'Grace' in Progreso, which the U.S. Coast Guard had intercepted on Sep 5, en route to Cuba. Mexico was officially treating the incident as an environmental violation. The ship was under the custody of the Mexican Ministry of the Navy (Secretaría de Marina, Semar), according to the Novena Zona Naval, based in Yucalpetén. The cargo was undergoing technical analysis, with particular attention paid to the quality and composition of the fuel on board. The USCG spoke of illegal fuel trafficking with Cuba and of methods employed by the so-called shadow fleet. Another reason given were alleged violations of regulations to prevent oil spills and international standards for the protection of the marine environment. According to a local report, an oil slick had been reported off the Costa Esmeralda in Yucatán prior to the seizure. Whether it was related to the ship remained unproven. The environmental justification allowed Mexico to detain the ship without commenting on the US sanctions policy toward Cuba. Mexico itself was one of Cuba's most important oil suppliers until early 2026. D The "Grace" had left a Panamanian port fully loaded on Aug 31. Five days later, the ship was stopped. On July 18, the ''Grace' had entered the port of Mariel, west of Havana, near a major power plant, after leaving Mariel on July 22. It arrived empty in Progreso on Aug 10 and returned to Panama. The 'Grace' also had sailed from Mariel to Venezuela in May. The owner of the ship is the Arkos Capital, based in Riga, whicon own only this one vessel. US Coast Guard seized two Cuba bound ships

Fri Oct 02 22:28:52 CEST 2026 Timsen

The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Oct 2, 2026, the seizure of two ships bound for Cuba, which were illegally carrying thousands of gallons of diesel fuel amid the ongoing fuel blockade to the country, in recent months. The 'Grace' was seized on Sep 5 by the US Coast Guard and Mexican authorities in the Caribbean Sea between Cuba and Mexico, after it was alleged to use covert operations to traverse the high seas. Coast Guard agents equipped in tactical gear boarded the container ship, guns drawn, while a separate Coast Guard boat went alongside. The Coast Guard had employed a range of assets and specialised capabilities to ensure a safe, seamless operation in accordance with U.S. and international law. The following assets and crews were involved in the interdiction operations: - U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 'Alert (WMEC-630)'; - U.S. Coast Guard Cutter 'Charles Sexton (WPC-1108)'; - U.S. Coast Guard HC-144 Fixed-Wing Aircraft; - U.S. Coast Guard Tactical Law Enforcement Team South; - U.S. Coast Guard Southeast District watchstanders. The 'Grace' was brought to Progreso, where a Mexican Navy (MARINA) inspection team confirmed the presence of large quantities of fuel in the vessel’s ballast tanks. It remained stationary as of Oct 2. The Coast Guard also announced the seizure of another Cuba-bound ship, the 'Jaira Provider', which allegedly was carrying more than 200,000 gallons of fuel when it was seized on June 28. The fuel aboard the 'Jaria Provider' was also stored in ballast tanks.
