Collision during interception of drug smuggling tug
On Sep 1, 2026, the Spanish police and Civil Guard forces, with the collaboration of Customs authorities and international agencies such as the US DEA, have intercepted the 'GT Victory' in the Atlantic near the Canary Islands, which was carrying over 3,300 kilograms of cocaine, while attempting to open a new route for transporting drugs from the Canary Islands to the Spanish mainland. The pursuit ended in a collision between the two vessels and an exchange of gunfire, that caused significant damage to the patrol boat and left several crew members of the 'GT Victory' injured. The severity of their injuries has not been disclosed. The eight detainees—Albanian and Filipino nationals—were transferred to Gran Canaria, where they remained pending their appearance before a judge. The case was being handled by the National Court. The tug was seized and taken in custody at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. During the search of the tug, the Spanish security forces discovered 139 bales of drugs, with a total weight of 3,361,32 kilograms. Tests performed on the seized substance confirmed it to be cocainem one of the largest seizures ever recorded in the Canary Islands, surpassed only by the haul seized last May aboard the 'Arconian'; at 30,215.84 kilograms, that remains the largest drug seizure ever recorded in Spain.
