Ferry suffered severe engine damage
Due to engine trouble, the sailings of the 'Guntsiet', operating between Brake and Harriersand, have been suspended until further notice. The ship remained stationary in Brake since April 30, 2026, due to a severe engine failure. The passenger ferry will not be able to make any further trips this season. Cooling water has entered the engine's interior, and there was extensive damage to the cylinders; the engine block itself may even be cracked. As the ferry was built in 1963 and the engine dated back to the 1980s, sourcing suitable spare parts proved to be extremely difficult. The vessel has been towed to the Heise shipyard in Bremerhaven to assess the damage and evaluate repair options. It turned out that the damage was irreparable. Now the possibility of a conversion to a diesel electric ferry was investigated. Since there was no direct replacement or alternative passenger ferry available, visitors and residents had to use the land route via the bridge at the southern end of the island since.
Swell shook passenger ship
On June 27, 2021, the master of the "Guntsiet" reported to the water police in Brake, complaining about a motor yacht that overtook his ship from aft, causing such a swell that the ferry, en route from Harrier Sand to Brake at 3.15 p.m., started to swing up. The passengers had to hold on and were endangered. Objects that were not tied down began to slide. The Brake Water Police was now looking for witnesses of the incident.
