Oil drained from sunken cutter
Preparations have commenced to raise the wreck of the "Hai IV", which sank at the Wiesbaden Bridge in Wilhelmshaven after having been neglected by its owner. On the afternoon of Dec 2, a disposal team pumped out the fuel. The fuel-water mixture was disposed off in special tank trucks. After the sinking, oil booms had been deployed within a radius of approximately ten meters to prevent further spread of the operating fluids. Derelict fishing vessel sank in Wilhelmshaven
On Nov 21, 2025, at 2 p.m. the 'Hai 4' has sunk near the Wiesbaden Bridge in Wilhelmshaven. The owner remains untraceable, while fuel and other operating fluids were leaking into the water. An oil boom was laid out by the fire brigade to prevent the fuel and other operating fluids from spreading. Oil was also being pumped from the surface sporadically. The salvage operation was proving complicated, because it was unclear how the fishing cutter is wedged underwater. An expert will have to determine whether a large crane might be necessary for the salvage operation. While the Water Police and the port authority now know who the owner is, they haven't been able to contact him yet. The man has owned the vessel since 2022. Apparently, no maintenance has been carried out since then, which may well be the cause of the sinking. For this reason, the authorities had reportedly been monitoring the fishing vessel for some time and recently received a search warrant. Since the vessel has now sunk, the planned inspection could no longer be carried out.
