Ferry and barge allided on Neckar

On Sep 29, 2026, the inland vessel 'Metanoia' (MMSI: 244750218), enroute from Gundelsheim to Wesseling, allided sideways with the 'HGB 34', which was moored at the riverbank, which was moored at the riverbank of the Neckar River in Neckargemünd, and pushed it approximately 100 meters downstream. The steel cable of the ferry snapped, and a massive steel mast was knocked down. There were no passengers on board, and no one was injured. The river was closed to navigation near Neckarhäuserhof, a district of Neckargemünd (Rhein-Neckar district), but only one other vessel was affected by the closure. Subsequently, the fire department and the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) assisted the operator in removing the damaged steel cable from the river.The river was re-opened for shipping traffic at 2.45 p.m. The police estimated the damage at 100,000 Euros. The exact cause of the accident was initially unclear; the Heidelberg water police was investigating. Some transmission fluid had leaked, but the fire brigades of Neckargemünd and Neckarsteinach contained and cleaned up the spill. The ferry remained out of service for the time being.
