Workboat raised in Oban Bay

Thu Apr 09 17:54:15 CEST 2026 Timsen

The 'Headcorn' was raised in the Oban Bay off the Isle of Kerrera, in pos. 56° 19' N 005° 42' W, on the early morning of April 6, more than one month after its sinking. The company Hapobarge had been contracted with the wreck removal and deployed the crane ship 'Lara 1' (IMO: 8521672), which was assisted by a landing craft, to get the vessel back to the surface. The recovery operation had started on April 2. The 'Lara 1' was carrying the wrecked workboat off Gourock on April 9. She appeared to have been heading for Roaneath but has turned around and anchored off Loch Long. The ' Headcorn' was a former workboat of the North West Marine, which had been built as the Clovelly Class British RMAS Naval Tender 'Headcorn' (A1766) in 1973. Workboat sank in Oban Bay

Tue Mar 17 21:52:17 CET 2026 Timsen

The volunteer crew of Oban Lifeboat were paged on March 3, 2026, shortly after 7.30 a.m. after the ' Headcorn' stsrted sinking in the Sound of Kerrera amid concerns that there might be people on board. On arrival, the workboat had sunk at her mooring and a large amount of flotsam and debris was found around the wreck. Following an initial search, it was then confirmed by the vessel’s owner that nobody was onboard. The Oban Lifeboat recovered the vessel’s EPIRB to ensure it could be deactivated and its battery did not begin to leak into the water. With the assistance of the manager of Kerrera Marina who attended in a rib, the crew recovered lifejackets, life-rings and as much floating debris as they could, and landed these ashore into the care of the HM Coastguard rescue team at the Oban sailing club. The HM Coastguard has been monitoring a vessel and was liaising closely with the owner, which has responsibility for salvage and counter-pollution measures. Containment booms were planned to be put in place by the owner, and the vessel to be removed later. Oil has begun to leak from the sunken boat on March 13 and was spreading far across the water.
