Skipper fined for illegally using gas oil

After the 'Hind' had arrived in Kiel on the evening of Feb 28, 2026, and was moored at the Tiessenkai in Holtenau for some repairs, customs officials came aboard on March 2 for a routine inspection. During the inspection, the officers took a closer look at the fuel tank. The contents were found to be 5,000 liters of tax-exempt diesel fuel. A reddish tint was also noticed when a sample was taken. Tax-exempt diesel fuel is deliberately dyed so that it is immediately recognizable during inspections. This fuel is intended only for specific purposes and may not be used in motor yachts. The origin of the fuel was unclear. The steel cutter, originally from the Soviet Union and later shipped to Denmark via the Baltic states, was en route from Haderslev to Spain. Customs officials initiated tax evasion proceedings against the yacht's 39-year-old captain for illegally using the gas oil. They assessed the energy tax at approximately €4,857.
