Polar ship suffered engine defect

Sun Oct 18 14:57:53 CEST 2026 Timsen

The HMS 'Protector' has been towed from Teesside to Devonport by commercial tugs, with Serco Marine Services tugs taking over the tow near the port following a reported defect, while the government was working towards a replacement. The ship returned to its home port while investigations into a defect took place. The nature of the problem, the extent of damage and the prospects for repairs have not been publicly established. Former Royal Navy officers have raised concerns about the condition of the vessel’s main engines, while speculation has emerged over whether the problem could be related to recent maintenance. Neither the cause nor any potential maintenance error has been established officially. Britain purchased the vessel in 2013 for 51 million pounds. The 'Protector' underwent a major refit in 2019-2020 after suffering a propulsion defect in the Caribbean. Further maintenance work took place in 2025, followed by additional work at a shipyard on Teesside.

Wed Dec 02 09:59:05 CET 2015 arnekiel

For the first time in 80 years a British Navy ship will patrol the Ross Sea, with HMS Protector setting out to target Patagonian toothfish poachers. The icebreaker, which usually works on the British-owned Antarctic Peninsula, has docked in Hobart ahead of a month-long patrol of the Ross Sea.The ship's captain, Rory Bryan, hopes the venture will deter illegal fishing operations."Our key role is going to be the maintenance of what is known as CCAMLR - which is the fishery protection role in Antarctica - and we're going to be helping the Australians, in effect, police those waters," he said.

HMS Protector in cleanup and surveying tasks in South Georgia

Sun Mar 01 10:22:24 CET 2015 arnekiel

The men and women of HMS Protector have helped the South Georgia Government by carrying out a beach cleanup and glacier survey. 700 miles east of the Falklands, South Georgia is a crescent shaped island with magnificent scenery and wildlife. But over the years debris from several shipwrecks has been washed up on the island’s beaches.
