Rescue ship detained in Lampedusa
On Aug 30, Italian authorities have provisionally detained the 'Humanity 2' in Lampedusa following its first mission in the Mediterranean. SOS Humanity described the allegations as unfounded. The organisation rejects allegations that the crew failed to report a rescue operation without delay, calling the blockade as a politically motivated move to hinder search and rescue operations. During its first mission, the crew rescued a total of 71 people in distress at sea. The first rescue involved 12 people in an unseaworthy boat off the Libyan coast; a day later, another 59 people were taken on board. SOS Humanity stated that the relevant authorities were informed as soon as the situation on board was secure and the search for any missing persons had been concluded. The organisation announced plans to take legal action against the detention. SOS Humanity also highlighted the high death toll in the central Mediterranean, noting that 27 bodies had been discovered there since mid-August alone.
Humanity 2 rescued 71 migrants
The 'Humanity 2 'has carried out its first two rescue operations, bringing a total of 71 people to safety during two operations in the central Mediterranean on Aug 28 and Aug 29, 2026. This marked the first time the civilian SAR organisation has had two ships in operation simultaneously, four years after the 'Humanity 1' began its first mission. On Aug 29 at midday the 'Humanity 2' brought the 71 survivors ashore on Lampedusa, which had been designated as a safe port by Italian authorities. The first rescue, involving 12 people in a small, unseaworthy fiberglass boat spotted by the crew in international waters off the Libyan coas, took place on Aug 28 around midday (CEST). The four women and eight men on board had set sail from Zuwara, Libya, on the evening of Aug 27; they were sailing without life jackets or navigation equipment. The crew distributed life jackets and brought everyone safely aboard the 'Humanity 2'. While heading north on Aug 29 at around 4:00 a.m., the sailing vessel’s crew encountered another overcrowded boat carrying 59 people in distress. All were taken aboard the 'Humanity 2'. Many migrants were weak and dehydrated, and the 'Humanity 2'’s medical team identified a total of three bone fractures among them. The boat had departed from Libya on the evening of Aug 28. Acting on instructions from Italian authorities, the 'Humanity 2' proceeded to the assigned safe port of Lampedusa, where all rescued were brought ashore around 12:00 p.m. On the morning of August 25, the crew had discovered three bodies amidst various unidentified floating objects. Due to the advanced state of decomposition of the bodies, the crew of the sailing vessel was unable to recover them. Since Aug 14, various rescue ships had discovered 27 bodies during their operations in the central Mediterranean, bringing the total number to 30.
