Roro ferry shifted to Piraeus after collision

Wed Jul 22 12:27:20 CEST 2026 Timsen

The Greek Coast Guard on July 21 issued a statement on the collision between the 'Elyros' and the 'Iosif K.' near Hania. The ferry was scheduled to sail to Piraeus with 100 passengers and 118 crew members aboard. Both vessels were initially barred from sailing pending inspections. After a damage assessment and review by a classification society, the 'Elyros' was cleared to continue its scheduled operations. The 'Iosif K.' remained under a sailing ban pending inspections by the relevant maritime authority. On July 22 it was permitted to proceed to Piraeus. The Coast Guard was investigating the cause of the incident and has begun legal proceedings under the direction of prosecutors. Administrative penalties were also being considered. Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias ordered a senior Coast Guard official responsible for maritime safety to travel to Hania to oversee the response.

Collision in Souda

Tue Jul 21 11:39:15 CEST 2026 Timsen

On July 21, 2026, at around 10 a.m., the ferry 'Elyros' (IMO: 9178599), while executing a scheduled route from Souda to Piraeus with 100 passengers, 32 cars and 95 trucks on board, was in collision with the 'Iosif K.', which was entering the port enroute from Piraeus. The ferry penetrated the smaller ship at its port side bow. Both vessels were damaged. No injuries and no pollution were reported. Both ships have been inspected by a classification society to determine if they were still fit to sail. The passengers remained on board until further notice. The circumstances of the accident were investigated by the competent port authorities. Both ships have been barred from sailing pending inspections by the authorities and the issuance of seaworthiness certificates.
