Surveillance aircraft to check probable sinking site after weather improvement

Fri Feb 13 12:54:24 CET 2026 Timsen

Salvamento Marítimo was planning to send a plane on Feb 14 to check the situation of the 'Itoitz in the Cantabrian Sea to verify if it has sunk.approximately 65 miles northwest of Cabo Peñas, where the AIS signal got lost. The weather forecast for Feb 13 was still not good, so they were waiting until improvement to carry out a reconnaissance flight. Likewise, the tig 'Alonso de Chaves', which had relieved the 'María Pita' on Feb 11, returned to its base in Gijón on Feb 12 after remaining in the emergency area amidst an orange alert at sea and waves of up to nine meters.

Signal of abandoned longliner lost off Cape Peñas

Fri Feb 13 10:37:57 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Itoitz', owned by Javier Sar, the mayor of Muxía (A Coruña) and based in Ondarroa (Bizkaia), according to all indications, sank during the storm northwest of Cape Peñas on Feb 11 at around 10 p.m. Salvamento Marítimo has reported that the emergency beacon signal for the longliner was persumably lost during the night approximately 65 nautical miles northwest of Cape Peñas. The AIS emitted its last signal at 10 p.m. and the emergency beacon of the fishing vessel was activated. In a statement issued by Salvamento Maritimo on Feb 12 after 9:00 a.m. it was indicated that the area where the fishing vessel had been adrift for 60 hours, were wave heights of up to nine meters, preventing the intervention of the tug 'Alonso de Chaves', which was to remain on standby until the storm has subsided. The tug located the emergency beacon on the early afternoon. The beacon is released when a vessel sinks. The tug was unable to retrieve it due to waves of up to nine meters in the area. As soon as the weather improved, Salvamento Marítimo planned to send a plane or helicopter to the area where the 'Itoitz' disappeared, in case any debris was afloat, since the 'Alonso de Chaves' did not spot any. The 'Salvamar María Pita' had managed to secure the vessel on Feb 11, but the extremely adverse weather conditions caused it to break free from the towline, preventing the salvors from bringing it to port. The tug left the scene at 1 p.m. A new storm called Oriana will bring very strong winds and rough seas on Feb 13 and 14, which was expected to subside within about 24 hours. A reconnaissance flight by an aircraft of Salvamento Marítimo was also planned, weather permitting, to verify whether the fishing vessel has sunk. Video: https://x.com/i/status/2021935936909594968

Towing wire broke after short time

Thu Feb 12 12:54:13 CET 2026 Timsen

The 'Itoitz', which was drifting north of Cedeira, was taken in tow on Feb 11 at around 10:00 a.m. by the 'María Pita', but the tow lines broke. The 'María Pita' had been planning to tow the longliner to the port of Celeiro (Viveiro). The longliner went adrift again amid west-southwest winds of force 10 (between 90 and 100 kilometers per hour) and waves exceeding four meters height. In the midst of Storm Nils, the weather continued to worsen throughout the afternoon. After 48 hours adrift in the storm, the vessel was located approximately 44 nautical miles north of Ribadeo. Salvamento Marítimo mobilized the tug 'Alonso de Chaves' (IMO 8411164) from A Coruña, the arrival of which in the area was expected at around 10:00 p.m., in order to relieve the 'María Pita', which returned to A Coruña. The Fisterra Maritime Rescue Center continued to coordinate the operation under the direction of the Burela Maritime Captaincy. In the Cantabrian Sea, an orange alert was active for rough seas, waves of five to six meters, and southwest winds of 31 knots. On Feb 9, Salvamento Marítimo had sent special operations personnel from the Fene base on the Helimer 402. They had to return to Alvedro Airport because 50-knot winds and four meter waves prevented them from accessing the fishing vessel to assess the possibility of pumping out the water or towing it. The Ferrol Maritime Authority, which assumed command of the emergency on Feb 10, had requested that the shipowner submit a salvage plan to recover the vessel. The Maritime Rescue Service has issued radio alerts to mariners to inform them of the incident and the position of the 'Itoitz'.
