Two Cuba bound ships seized
The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Oct 2, 2026, the seizure of two ships bound for Cuba, which were illegally carrying thousands of gallons of diesel fuel amid the ongoing fuel blockade to the country, in recent months. The 'Grace' was seized on Sep 5 by the US Coast Guard and Mexican authorities in the Caribbean Sea between Cuba and Mexico, after it was alleged to use covert operations to traverse the high seas. Coast Guard agents equipped in tactical gear boarded the container ship, guns drawn, while a separate Coast Guard boat went alongside. The 'Grace' was brought to Progreso, where a Mexican Navy (MARINA) inspection team confirmed the presence of large quantities of fuel in the vessel’s ballast tanks. The Coast Guard also announced the seizure of another Cuba-bound ship, the 'Jaira Provider', which allegedly was carrying more than 200,000 gallons of fuel when it was seized on June 28. The fuel aboard the 'Jaria Provider' was also stored in ballast tanks. Accordiong to an incident report from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the supply vessel had been moored at a pier in Mayagüez since July 9. An oil slick formed around the hull, apparently leaking from bolts on the ship. The Coast Guard sealed the affected areas and deployed an oil boom. According to the report, there were approximately 220,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board, about 833 tons, on board.
